King Automatic started out in the mid-’90s as the drummer for the French punk band Thundercrack, but in the early 2000s he switched things up completely, taking the whole “one-man band” idea to a whole new level. Live, he samples and loops organ, guitar, harmonica, and percussion, building a huge sound where he mixes Jamaican rocksteady with rhythm & blues or bebop so smoothly that, if you close your eyes, it feels like you’re hearing a full band (or even an orchestra).
